Ian M. Thompson, Jr., MD

Ian M. Thompson, Jr, MD, is professor and chairman of the Urology Division at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antonio, Texas. Thompson received his undergraduate training at the United States Military Academy, West Point, N.Y., and his medical training at Tulane University. This was followed by a residency in urology at Brooke Army Medical Center and a fellowship in urologic oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antonio, he served as chairman of urology and then of surgery at Brooke Army Medical Center.

Thompson serves as the chairman of the Prostate Cancer Panel of the American Urological Association, serves on numerous editorial boards and national committees, has published more than 150 scientific articles, 25 book chapters, and has edited two surgical textbooks. Thompson's research interests include chemoprevention of prostate cancer, complementary medical approaches to urologic disease, screening for urologic disease, and novel approaches to clinical decision-making.
