What is Xyosted used for?
Xyosted is commonly used for a condition called hypogonadism, which causes low testosterone levels in men.

How does Xyosted work (mechanism of action)?
Xyosted contains testosterone and works to add more testosterone to a person’s body to help them achieve normal levels.
How is Xyosted supplied (dosage forms)?
Xyosted is available in the following dosage forms that are injected under the skin.
- 50 mg/0.5 mL solution for injection, autoinjector
- 75 mg/0.5 mL solution for injection, autoinjector
- 100 mg/0.5 mL solution for injection, autoinjector
How should I store Xyosted?
Xyosted should be stored at room temperature, between 68 F to 77 F (20 C to 25 C). It can be exposed to temperatures between 59 F to 86 F (15 C to 30 C) for shorter periods of time, such as when transporting it. Store in a cool, dry place. Do not refrigerate or freeze. Protect from light. Keep the injection in the carton until you are ready to use it.
Side Effects
What are the most common side effects of Xyosted?
The most common side effects of Xyosted are listed below. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any of these side effects that bother you.
- Changes in laboratory tests (see below)
- High blood pressure (see below)
- Bruising at the injection site
- Headache

What are the serious side effects of Xyosted?
While less common, the most serious side effects of Xyosted are described below, along with what to do if they happen.
Severe Allergic Reactions. Xyosted may cause allergic reactions, which can be serious. Stop using Xyosted and get help right away if you have any of the following symptoms of a serious allergic reaction.
- Breathing problems or wheezing
- Racing heart
- Fever or general ill feeling
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue, or throat
- Trouble swallowing or throat tightness
- Itching, skin rash, or pale red bumps on the skin called hives
- Nausea or vomiting
- Dizziness, feeling lightheaded, or fainting
- Stomach cramps
- Joint pain
Increased Blood Pressure (Hypertension). Xyosted may increase your blood pressure or make it worse if you have a history of high blood pressure. Call your healthcare provider if your blood pressure increases while using this medicine.
If you measure your blood pressure and the top number (systolic) is 180 mm Hg or higher or the bottom number (diastolic) is 120 mm Hg or higher, get medical attention right away. Increases in blood pressure may not be noticeable but look out for any of the following symptoms of severely high blood pressure.
- Sudden severe headache
- Chest pain
- Dizziness or confusion
- Trouble breathing
- Nausea/vomiting
- Blurry or other changes to vision
- Anxiety
- Buzzing in the ears
- Nosebleed
- Feeling of skipped heartbeats
Increased Red Blood Cells. Xyosted may cause an increase in your red blood cells (hematocrit) or an increase in hemoglobin, which is a protein found in your red blood cells. In severe cases, it may increase your risk for blood clots. Your healthcare provider may monitor your hematocrit and hemoglobin through blood tests while you are using Xyosted and may stop the medicine if your red blood cell count is high. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you have any of the following symptoms.
- Blurred vision
- Headaches
- Confusion
- Itching
- Weakness or tiredness
Blood Clots. Xyosted can increase your risk of blood clots. This may include venous thromboembolism (VTE), stroke, heart attack, or a blood clot in the lungs (pulmonary embolism). Get emergency help if you have any of the following symptoms.
- Chest pain or pressure
- Fast or abnormal heartbeat
- Trouble breathing
- Pain in your back, jaw, throat, or arm
- Sweating, upset stomach, vomiting, or dizziness
- Sudden weakness on one side of your body
- Sudden and severe headache
- Slurred speech or trouble understanding speech
- Pain, swelling, or redness in your arm or leg that will not go away
Prostate Cancer. Using Xyosted may increase your chances of developing prostate cancer. Your healthcare provider will monitor you while you are using Xyosted. Keep all appointments with your healthcare provider.
Risk of Abuse and Misuse. Misusing Xyosted can lead to serious side effects like heart problems or mental health problems. Abuse and misuse means using a medicine in a way other than how it was prescribed or using too much. Use Xyosted exactly as prescribed. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any of the following serious symptoms.
- Heart attack
- Depression
- Extreme energy and behavior (mania)
- Having a hard time differentiating from what is real and what is imagined (delusions)
- Feeling paranoid
- Aggression
Effect on Sperm Count. High doses of Xyosted may lower your sperm count.
Liver Damage. Liver damage, also called hepatotoxicity, can happen when using Xyosted. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any of the following symptoms of liver damage.
- Nausea or vomiting
- Stomach or belly pain
- Fever
- Weakness or unusual tiredness
- Itching
- Loss of appetite
- Light-colored poop
- Dark-colored urine (pee)
- Your skin or the whites of your eyes turning yellowish in color (also called jaundice)
Fluid Retention. Xyosted can cause your body to hold fluid, causing your ankles and feet to swell (edema). This may be worse if you have heart, kidney, or liver problems. Tell your healthcare provider if you experience this.
Enlarged Breasts. Men using Xyosted may cause enlarged breasts in men (gynecomastia) that could be painful.
High Cholesterol. Using Xyosted can cause your cholesterol to increase. Your healthcare provider will monitor your cholesterol levels and may change the dose of your cholesterol lowering medicine or stop Xyosted.
Suicidal Thoughts and Actions. Xyosted may cause depression and suicidal thoughts or actions in a small number of people. If you are about to harm yourself, call 911 or call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any of the following symptoms.
- New or increased thoughts of suicide or death
- Suicide attempt
- New or increased feelings of anxiety, depression, or other unusual changes in mood or behavior
Warnings & Precautions
Who should not use Xyosted?
Allergies to Ingredients. People who are allergic to any of the following should not use Xyosted.
- Xyosted
- Testosterone
- Sesame oil
- Any of the ingredients in the specific product dispensed
Your pharmacist can tell you all of the ingredients in Xyosted.
Cancer. Xyosted should not be used if you have breast or prostate cancer.
Pregnancy. Do not use Xyosted if you are pregnant. If you become pregnant, contact your healthcare professional right away. See the Pregnancy section for more details.
Low Testosterone Without Certain Medical Conditions. Xyosted is used in men who have low testosterone levels due to genetic conditions or issues with the testes, glands, or certain hormone levels. As men get older, their testosterone levels naturally become lower. Do not use Xyosted if you have low testosterone levels due to your age.
What should I know about Xyosted before using it?
Keep Xyosted out of the reach of children. Xyosted is a controlled substance because it can be misused or lead to dependence. Store Xyosted in a safe place to protect it from theft. It is illegal to sell or give away this medicine.
Follow the Instructions for Use that comes with your prescription on how to inject Xyosted. Make sure that you or a caregiver understands how to properly prepare and use Xyosted. If you have any questions, talk to your healthcare provider.
Do not use Xyosted unless it has been prescribed to you by a healthcare provider. Use it as prescribed.
Do not share Xyosted with other people, even if they have the same condition as you. It may harm them.
What should I tell my healthcare provider before using Xyosted?
Tell your healthcare provider about all of your health conditions and any prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, vitamins/minerals, herbal products, and other supplements you are using. This will help them determine if Xyosted is right for you.
In particular, make sure that you discuss any of the following.
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). Using Xyosted can worsen BPH, also known as an enlarged prostate. This can worsen the following symptoms of BPH noted below.
- Frequent peeing during the day and night
- Trouble starting your urine stream
- Having the urge to go the bathroom right away
- Having a urine accident
- Having a hard time peeing
Sleep Apnea. If you have sleep apnea, which is a condition where breathing stops and starts again while sleeping, using Xyosted may make it worse. Also, using Xyosted in people who have been diagnosed with obesity or chronic lung disease such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) can increase their risk of having sleep apnea.
Other Current and Past Health Conditions. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any of the following.
- High blood pressure
- Heart problems
- High red blood cell count or hemoglobin
- Kidney or liver problems
- Mental health problems including anxiety, depression, mood changes, or suicidal thoughts or actions
Other Medicines and Supplements. Xyosted may interact with other medicines and supplements. Before using Xyosted, tell your healthcare provider about any prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, vitamins/minerals, herbal products, and other supplements you are using. See the Interactions section for more details.
Pregnancy. Xyosted may cause harm to an unborn baby. Xyosted is not indicated for use in women.
Breastfeeding. Xyosted is not indicated for use in women.

Does Xyosted interact with other medicines (drug interactions)?
Always tell your healthcare provider about any prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, vitamins/minerals, herbal products, and other supplements you are using.
In particular, make sure that you discuss if you are using any of the following before using Xyosted.
- Insulin, which is used for diabetes
- Blood thinners, including warfarin (Coumadin, Jantoven)
- A corticosteroid, which is a medicine for certain inflammatory conditions
- Medicines to treat pain or cold symptoms

Overdose/Missed Dose
What should I do if I accidentally use too much Xyosted?
If you or someone else has used too much Xyosted, get medical help right away, call 911, or contact a Poison Control center at 800-222-1222.
What should I do if I miss a dose of Xyosted?
If you miss a dose, inject it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and only inject the next dose. Do not use double or extra doses.
