What is Altuviiio used for?

Altuviiio [antihemophilic factor (recombinant), Fc-VWF-XTEN fusion protein-ehtl] is commonly used for an inherited condition called hemophilia A, also known as congenital factor VIII deficiency.

How does Altuviiio work (mechanism of action)?

People with hemophilia A have low levels of an important blood protein called factor VIII. Altuviiio works by replacing factor VIII in the body.

How is Altuviiio supplied (dosage forms)?

Altuviiio is available in the following dosage forms that are injected into a blood vessel.

  • 250 IU single-dose vial with prefilled diluent syringe
  • 500 IU single-dose vial with prefilled diluent syringe
  • 750 IU single-dose vial with prefilled diluent syringe
  • 1000 IU single-dose vial with prefilled diluent syringe
  • 2000 IU single-dose vial with prefilled diluent syringe
  • 3000 IU single-dose vial with prefilled diluent syringe
  • 4000 IU single-dose vial with prefilled diluent syringe

How should I store Altuviiio?

Altuviiio should be kept in its original carton to protect it from light. It must be stored in the refrigerator, between 36 F to 46 F (2 C to 8 C) and should not be frozen. This medicine can be stored outside of the refrigerator, up to 86 F (30 C) for up to 6 months. If it is kept outside of the refrigerator for longer than 6 months, it should be thrown away.

Once the medicine has been reconstituted (mixed with the diluent), it must be used within 3 hours. If it is not used within that time, it should be thrown away.

What are the most common side effects of Altuviiio?

The most common side effects of Altuviiio are listed below. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any of these side effects that bother you.

  • Headache
  • Joint pain

What are the serious side effects of Altuviiio?

While less common, the most serious side effects of Altuviiio are described below, along with what to do if they happen.

Severe Allergic Reactions. Altuviiio may cause allergic reactions, which can be serious. Stop using Altuviiio and get help right away if you have any of the following symptoms of a serious allergic reaction.

  • Breathing problems or wheezing
  • Racing heart
  • Fever or general ill feeling
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue, or throat
  • Trouble swallowing or throat tightness
  • Itching, skin rash, or pale red bumps on the skin called hives
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Dizziness, feeling lightheaded, or fainting
  • Stomach cramps
  • Joint pain

Developing Antibodies or “Inhibitors”. Some people who use Altuviiio may develop antibodies, or inhibitors, that block the effects of this medicine. These antibodies can reduce the effects of Altuviiio. It is important that you keep all of your appointments for blood work. Call your healthcare provider right away if Altuviiio does not control your bleeding as expected.

Who should not use Altuviiio?

Allergies to Ingredients. People who are allergic to any of the following should not use Altuviiio.

  • Altuviiio
  • Antihemophilic factor (recombinant), fc-vwf-xten fusion protein
  • Efanesoctocog alfa 
  • Any of the ingredients in the specific product dispensed

What should I know about Altuviiio before using it?

Do not use Altuviiio unless it has been prescribed to you by a healthcare provider. Use it as prescribed.

Do not share Altuviiio with other people, even if they have the same condition as you. It may harm them.

Keep Altuviiio out of the reach of children. Since this medicine may be kept in a refrigerator, take special precautions to keep it away from children who also use the refrigerator.

Altuviiio is given as an infusion into the vein (IV). This infusion is often given by a healthcare professional in a healthcare facility. With proper training, this medicine may also be given at home. If you plan to give this medicine at home, make sure that you or a caregiver understands how to properly store, prepare, and use Altuviiio. If you have any questions, talk to your healthcare provider. 

What should I tell my healthcare provider before using Altuviiio?

Tell your healthcare provider about all of your health conditions and any prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, vitamins/minerals, herbal products, and other supplements you are using. This will help them determine if Altuviiio is right for you.

In particular, make sure that you discuss any of the following.

Pregnancy. It is not known if or how Altuviiio could affect pregnancy or harm an unborn baby. Tell your healthcare provider if you are or plan to become pregnant. Your healthcare provider will advise you if you should use Altuviiio while you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant.

Breastfeeding. It is not known if Altuviiio passes into breast milk. Tell your healthcare provider if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. Your healthcare provider will advise you if you should use Altuviiio while breastfeeding.

Does Altuviiio interact with foods or drinks?

There are no known interactions between Altuviiio and foods or drinks.

It is unknown if drinking alcohol will affect Altuviiio, but drinking large amounts of alcohol can increase your risk of bleeding. It is best to limit the amount of alcohol you drink.

Does Altuviiio interact with other medicines (drug interactions)?

There are no known interactions between Altuviiio and other medicines. Always tell your healthcare provider about any prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, vitamins/minerals, herbal products, and other supplements you are using.

Overdose/Missed Dose

What should I do if I accidentally use too much Altuviiio?

If you or someone else has used too much Altuviiio, get medical help right away, call 911, or contact a Poison Control center at 800-222-1222.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Altuviiio?

If you use Altuvio regularly and miss one of your scheduled doses, use it as soon as possible. If you only use Altuviiio when needed for a bleeding episode, use it as your healthcare provider recommends. Do not use double or extra doses.
