What is Zavzpret used for?

Zavzpret (zavegepant) is a nasal spray commonly used for the treatment of migraine with or without aura. An aura may occur before or during a migraine attack, and can include sensory problems like seeing flashing lights or zigzag lines, having trouble speaking, or experiencing a tingling sensation. 

Zavzpret may also be used for other conditions as determined by your healthcare provider.

How does Zavzpret work (mechanism of action)?

Zavzpret works by blocking a substance in the brain called calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), which is involved in headache pain and can make headaches last longer. By blocking CGRP, Zavzpret helps treat migraine.

How is Zavzpret supplied (dosage forms)?

  • Zavzpret is available as a 10 mg nasal spray.

How should I store Zavzpret?

Zavzpret should be stored at room temperature, between 68 F to 77 F (20 C to 25 C). It can be exposed to temperatures between 59 F to 86 F (15 C to 30 C) for shorter periods of time, such as when transporting it. Store in a cool, dry place. Do not freeze Zavzpret.

What are the most common side effects of Zavzpret?

The most common side effects of Zavzpret are listed below. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any of these side effects that bother you.

  • Change in how things taste
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Nasal discomfort

What are the serious side effects of Zavzpret?

While less common, the most serious side effects of Zavzpret are described below, along with what to do if they happen.

Severe Allergic Reactions. Zavzpret may cause allergic reactions, which can be serious. Stop using Zavzpret and get help right away if you have any of the following symptoms of a serious allergic reaction.

  • Breathing problems or wheezing
  • Racing heart
  • Fever or general ill feeling
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue, or throat
  • Trouble swallowing or throat tightness
  • Itching, skin rash, or pale red bumps on the skin called hives
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Dizziness, feeling lightheaded, or fainting
  • Stomach cramps
  • Joint pain

Warnings & Precautions

Who should not use Zavzpret?

Allergies to Ingredients. People who are allergic to any of the following should not use Zavzpret.

  • Zavegepant
  • Zavzpret
  • Any of the ingredients in the specific product dispensed

Your pharmacist can tell you all of the ingredients in Zavzpret.

Kidney Problems. Zavzpret should not be used if your kidneys are not working as well as they should be. If there is a concern about the health of your kidneys, your healthcare provider may do tests to determine if they are working well enough to use this medicine.

What should I know about Zavzpret before using it?

Do not use Zavzpret unless it has been prescribed to you by a healthcare provider. Use it as prescribed.

Do not share Zavzpret with other people, even if they have the same condition as you. It may harm them.

Keep Zavzpret out of the reach of children.

Only open the sealed package when you are ready to use Zavzpret.

Do not use expired medicine. If the expiration date has passed, throw away the device and call the pharmacy for a refill.

Each Zavzpret device is for one-time use. Do not press the plunger or try a test spray before using Zavzpret. Doing so will cause the device to stop working.

Zavzpret is sprayed one time in one nostril. Do not try to spray Zavzpret into both nostrils.

Do not use Zavzpret more than once in 24 hours. You can only use a maximum of one dose per day. 

You should keep a journal (or use a mobile app) to keep track of migraine attacks, along with when you take Zavzpret. This will help you and your healthcare provider understand how well Zavzpret works for you.

What should I tell my healthcare provider before using Zavzpret?

Tell your healthcare provider about all of your health conditions and any prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, vitamins/minerals, herbal products, and other supplements you are using. This will help them determine if Zavzpret is right for you.

In particular, make sure that you discuss any of the following.

Current and Past Health Conditions. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any of the following.

  • Kidney problems
  • Liver problems

Other Medicines and Supplements. Zavzpret may interact with other medicines and supplements. Before using Zavzpret, tell your healthcare provider about any prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, vitamins/minerals, herbal products, and other supplements you are using. Pregnancy. It is not known if or how Zavzpret could affect pregnancy or harm an unborn baby. Tell your healthcare provider if you are or plan to become pregnant. 

Breastfeeding. It is not known if Zavzpret passes into breast milk. Tell your healthcare provider if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. Your healthcare provider will advise you if you should use Zavzpret while breastfeeding.

Interactions

Does Zavzpret interact with foods or drinks?

There are no known interactions between Zavzpret and foods or drinks.

There are no known interactions between Zavzpret and alcohol. However, alcohol can trigger migraine attacks in some people. Consult your healthcare provider for more information and medical advice. 

Does Zavzpret interact with other medicines (drug interactions)?

Always tell your healthcare provider about any prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, vitamins/minerals, herbal products, and other supplements you are using.

In particular, make sure that you discuss if you are using any of the following before using Zavzpret.

  • A decongestant that you spray in your nose, such as oxymetazoline (Afrin), which is used to treat congestion caused by a cold or allergies
  • Rifampin, which is a medicine commonly used to treat an infection called tuberculosis

Some other medicines may alter the blood levels of Zavzpret. Tell your healthcare provider about all medicines that you take or have recently taken.

Overdose/Missed Dose

What should I do if I accidentally use too much Zavzpret?

If you or someone else has used too much Zavzpret, get medical help right away, call 911, or contact a Poison Control center at 800-222-1222.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Zavzpret?

Zavzpret is meant to be used only when needed. Use it as your healthcare provider recommends. Do not use double or extra doses.
