What is Neffy used for?

Neffy (epinephrine nasal) is used for the treatment of serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis. Neffy is used only during emergencies. Anyone using Neffy should seek medical care right away.

Neffy may also be used for other conditions as determined by your healthcare provider.

Other forms of epinephrine are available for inhalation or injection. See Epinephrine inhaled and Epinephrine for more information.

How does Neffy work (mechanism of action)?

Allergic reactions can cause many different symptoms, including very low blood pressure, skin reactions (such as a rash or hives), and swelling of the throat, lips, or tongue that can make it hard to breathe. 

Neffy acts on certain receptors in the body called alpha- and beta-adrenergic receptors. This causes the blood vessels to narrow (which can increase blood pressure), opens the airways, and reduces swelling. This can help to relieve symptoms of serious allergic reactions while seeking medical care.

How is Neffy supplied (dosage forms)?

  • Neffy is available as a 2 mg/0.1 mL nasal solution that is sprayed into the nose.

How should I store Neffy?

Neffy should be stored at room temperature, between 68 F to 77 F (20 C to 25 C). It can be exposed to temperatures up to 122 F (50C) for shorter periods of time, such as when transporting it. Store in a cool, dry place. Do not freeze Neffy.

Side Effects

What are the most common side effects of Neffy?

The most common side effects of Neffy are listed below. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any of these side effects that bother you.

  • Throat irritation
  • Tingling or discomfort in your nose
  • Runny, itchy, or stuffy nose
  • Sneezing
  • Headache
  • Shakiness or feeling jittery
  • Tingling sensation
  • Fatigue
  • Stomach pain
  • Gum pain or numbness in your mouth
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea or vomiting

Warnings & Precautions

Who should not use Neffy?

Allergies to Ingredients. People who are allergic to any of the following should talk to their healthcare provider before using Neffy. If you are having a serious allergic reaction, you should still use Neffy even if you have an allergy to it or any of the ingredients below.

  • Neffy
  • Epinephrine
  • Sulfite
  • Any of the ingredients in the specific product dispensed

Your pharmacist can tell you all of the ingredients in Neffy.

What should I know about Neffy before using it?

Do not use Neffy unless it has been prescribed to you by a healthcare provider. Use it as prescribed.

Do not share Neffy with other people, even if they have the same condition as you. It may harm them.

Keep Neffy out of the reach of children.

Make sure that you or a caregiver understands how to properly use Neffy. If you have any questions, talk to your healthcare provider.

Always get medical help right away after using Neffy.

Each Neffy carton comes with 2 nasal sprays. Each nasal spray contains a single dose and can only be used one time. Do not test or prime the device. Use Neffy by placing it into one nostril and pressing the plunger.

Do not sniff during or after receiving a Neffy dose. If liquid drips out of your nose after using Neffy, you may have not received the full dose. You may need a second dose.

If your symptoms continue or get worse, use a second dose. If a second dose is needed, use one spray in the same nostril using a new device 5 minutes after the first dose.

Since it is not possible to know when an allergic reaction might happen, two Neffy devices should always be available, including at home, work, school, and other activities. Make sure that family, friends, caretakers, teachers, co-workers, or anyone else who may be able to help during an emergency knows where Neffy is stored and how to use it.

Neffy may change the way other nasal sprays work for up to 2 weeks after using it. Talk to your healthcare provider if you use other nasal sprays.

What should I tell my healthcare provider before using Neffy?

Tell your healthcare provider about all of your health conditions and any prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, vitamins/minerals, herbal products, and other supplements you are using. This will help them determine if Neffy is right for you.

In particular, make sure that you discuss any of the following.

  • Current and Past Health Conditions. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any of the following.
  • Nasal problems, such as nasal polyps, a broken nose or other nose injury, or nasal surgery
  • Heart problems
  • Kidney problems
  • Low potassium levels
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Thyroid problems
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Fluid in your lungs, also called pulmonary edema

Other Medicines and Supplements. Neffy may interact with other medicines and supplements. Before using Neffy, tell your healthcare provider about any prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, vitamins/minerals, herbal products, and other supplements you are using. See the Interactions section for more details.

Pregnancy. It is not known if or how Neffy could affect pregnancy or harm an unborn baby. Tell your healthcare provider if you are or plan to become pregnant. If you are pregnant and having a severe allergic reaction, you should use Neffy and get emergency help right away.

Breastfeeding. It is not known if Neffy passes into breast milk. Tell your healthcare provider if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. If you are breastfeeding and having a severe allergic reaction, you should use Neffy and get emergency help right away.

Interactions

Does Neffy interact with foods or drinks?

There are no known interactions between Neffy and foods or drinks.

It is unknown if drinking alcohol will affect Neffy.

Does Neffy interact with other medicines (drug interactions)?

Neffy may interact with certain medicines. Always tell your healthcare provider about any prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, vitamins/minerals, herbal products, and other supplements you are using.

In particular, make sure that you discuss if you are using any of the following before using Neffy.

  • Other nasal sprays
  • A diuretic, also called a water pill, which is a medicine used to reduce edema (fluid retention) and blood pressure
  • A tricyclic antidepressant, such as amitriptyline, nortriptyline, or protriptyline, even if it is not used for depression
  • A monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), which is a medicine usually used for depression or Parkinson’s disease
  • A medicine used to control your heart rate or rhythm (antiarrhythmic)
  • Digoxin (Lanoxin), which is a medicine used to treat irregular heartbeat and some types of heart failure
  • A catechol-O-methyl-transferase inhibitor (COMT inhibitor), such as entacapone (Comtan), tolcapone (Tasmar), or opicapone (Ongentys), which are medicines used for Parkinson’s disease
  • An ergot, such as ergotamine (Ergomar) or dihydroergotamine (Migranal or Trudhesa), which is a medicine that may be used to treat migraine
  • An alpha-blocker, such as phentolamine, which is a medicine that may be used for certain procedures or for some people with heart disease or high blood pressure
  • A beta-blocker, such as metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL, and others), atenolol (Tenormin), or propranolol (Inderal LA, Innopran XL), which is a medicine that may be used for certain heart conditions or to reduce blood pressure
  • A thyroid medicine, such as levothyroxine, which is used to raise thyroid hormone levels
  • Medicines used in labor
  • An antihistamine, such as chlorpheniramine or diphenhydramine (Benadryl), which is a medicine commonly used to treat allergy symptoms

Overdose/Missed Dose

What should I do if I accidentally use too much Neffy?
