Age-related macular degeneration or AMD, is a main cause of vision loss in older adults. While it rarely causes total blindness, AMD can greatly impact quality of life. This video explores assistive devices that help people with AMD stay independent, including eyeglasses, magnifiers, and technologies.

Eyeglasses for AMD. Special eyeglasses are helpful for people with AMD. These may include telescopic lenses, magnification, glare reduction, and color contrast enhancement.

Magnifiers and other low-vision aids. Magnifiers range from handheld devices to computer systems. Options include magnifiers with lights, color contrast, and image capture.

Large print-materials, large-print books and digital displays with big text assist those with age-related macular degeneration. Audiobooks are great for those who prefer listening.

Walking canes. Walking canes may use ultrasound to detect obstacles before contact.

Appliances. Many household items have features to assist those with vision impairment, like big displays, and voice activation.
