Felicia Cosman, MD

After graduating from Cornell University and Stony Brook Medical School, Felicia Cosman, MD, received her internal medicine training and completed her endocrinology fellowship at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. In 1988, she moved to Helen Hayes Hospital where she has been an osteoporosis specialist, clinical scientist, and medical director of the Clinical Research Center.

Her research has focused on the causes of osteoporosis and how the female hormone estrogen and drugs called SERMS work to treat osteoporosis. She also is studying experimental treatments for osteoporosis, including parathyroid hormone, and the causes of stress fractures in military cadets.

She has recieved research grants from the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Defense, and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society as well as several pharmaceutical companies. She serves on the editorial board of Osteoporosis International and is a regular reviewer for the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, and Calcified Tissue International. Cosman has served as clinical director for the National Osteoporosis Foundation since 1996 and has been an associate professor of clinical medicine at Columbia University since 1997.
