Food Is critically important. It's not only important for the well-being of the child and the family, but also for their overall health and actually brain development as well, for them to be on target. So it affects everything and especially the energy to move.

So let's talk about breakfast. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Why? Because it helps kids concentrate better. It helps them move better. It helps them be in a better mood. So what you want to do is make sure they have that breakfast. And if you are running around in the morning, maybe plan some snacks on-the-go or breakfast on-the-go.

So for example, take some crackers and cheese, maybe some hard boiled eggs. Maybe you could do some PBJ squares. Mix it up a little bit. And ask your kids what they like. And just put those together the night before. Put them in the fridge. And that way, they can grab and go.

For teens, maybe a smoothie and a water container or maybe a smoothie from the grocery store-- that's a great way to go. Or a snack bar would be great as well, along with some sliced apples. So there's many options. Just plan ahead. Put it in that fridge. And make sure it's ready to go the very next morning.

What about carpool? Again, the plan ahead theme. If you can put some snacks in the car-- and what I do is in my minivan, we have trail mix. So the kids get hungry. They get handed a bag of trail mix.

Those raisin boxes are great. Some cartons of milk are great. And if you can put in some turkey sandwiches and cut them up in squares, those are great to pass around.

And also, dinner is really important too. Now, dinner is really hard for a lot of families. With working families, both parents are working. The kids are in activities. They got to get their homework done, get them to bed on time. It is hard. There's no doubt about it.

What I do is I'll actually make some meals for not only Sunday, but Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. Stick them in the fridge. And that way, those three days are covered. Maybe a quick meal on a Wednesday, like a turkey burger or chicken burger, even a black bean burger, and then the next day, a pasta meal.

And yes, we do do take out once a week. And that's OK. Just pick some healthy options and supplement them with vegetables or a salad. And make sure that they get a very well-rounded meal.
