The female body has the ability to create human life. What happens if you're pregnant and you have ulcerative colitis? Here are a few ways to manage your UC and plan for the healthiest pregnancy possible. First off, it's best to be in remission before trying to conceive or at the time of conception.

It may be harder for you to get pregnant. Fertility rates lower for women who've had UC surgery. It's best to check with your doctor about your medications at least three to six months before trying to get pregnant. Some meds, like methotrexate, should not be taken during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

Do your best to keep flare-ups at a minimum. Stay on your approved medications. Eat a well-balanced diet. Take your vitamins and especially folic acid, which helps prevent spina bifida. It's especially important for women taking sulfasalazine, which lowers folic acid absorption.

Keep your UC in check because flare-ups will be harder to control while pregnant. That said, being pregnant with UC does come with a silver lining. Sometimes, because pregnancy suppresses a woman's immune system, you might find your UC improve and end up feeling better than you ever thought you would. [MUSIC PLAYING]
