Jeffrey Lieberman, MD, is the Lawrence C. Kolb Professor and Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, director of the New York State Psychiatric Institute, and psychiatrist-in-chief at New York-Presbyterian Hospital - Columbia University Medical Center. He is also the past president of the American Psychiatric Association.
Over the course of his 30-year career as a doctor and scientist, Lieberman has studied the nature and treatment of mental illness and continuously cared for patients. His work has significantly advanced our knowledge of the pathophysiology and treatment of schizophrenia and related psychotic disorders. This research has fundamentally contributed to our current standards of care, the development of new medications, and the transformative mental health care strategy for the early detection and prevention of schizophrenia.
Lieberman has authored more than 600 papers and articles published in the scientific literature, and he has written or edited 12 books on mental illness and psychiatry including the critically acclaimed Shrinks: The Untold Story of Psychiatry. He is the recipient of many honors and awards, and in 2000 he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine and fellowship in the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
